American Red Cross Training Classes

The City of Inverness holds aquatic American Red Cross classes at the Whispering Pines City Park pool facility. To enroll in one of the courses listed below or to inquire about course dates and times, contact Kellie Powell, Aquatics Complex Coordinator, by dialing (352) 726-1995 or via email.

Lifeguard Training

Whispering Pines City Park Aquatic Complex will be offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class beginning with the Prerequisite Skills Test on Saturday, March 14th, 2020 from 9 - 10 a.m. at the pool. After successfully completing skills test, registration is available. The Red Cross class is designed to give those that successfully complete the course the ability to recognize and respond to emergencies in and around pool environments. Student will have an understanding of patron surveillance, accident/injury prevention, CPR and first aid as well as many other professional skills.

The cost for the Lifeguard Certification class is $165 and will include seven hours of on-line course and twenty one hours of class/pool skill learning. 

Prerequisite course will include:
  • Student must be 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson which is to be announced.
  • Student must demonstrate the ability to swim 300 yards, front crawl or breast stroke with rhythmic breathing, proper stroke, kick and glides.
  • Student must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs and student must be able to complete a timed swim (no more than 1 minute, 40 seconds) recovering a 10 pound brick from 10 feet of water and return to the starting point 20 yards away.
Prerequisite Testing: Saturday, March 14th from  9 - 10 am
Class Dates: March 20th thru March 23rd from 9 - 10  Fri/Sat and Monday.  Sunday's class time is 12 pm - 4pm

Water Safety/Swim Lesson Instructor

A Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course is also held at the Whispering Pines City Park Pool facility on an annual basis when demand for the course is met. The WSI course certifies the successful candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become a swim lesson instructor at most swimming pool facilities in the country.

The course is scheduled for February 14th thru February 17th, 2020.

The prerequisite swim test consists of a demonstration of each stroke: Front, crawl, back crawl, breast stroke, elementary, backstroke and sidestroke for a distance of 25 yards and the butterfly stroke for 15 yards, all at a level 4 competency.  In addition, the potential candidate needs to be able to maintain a back float for 1 minute and to tread water for 1 minute.

The cost of the WSI course is $165 after successful completion of swim test. The manual will be provided for students. Space is limited.
